Inspired by the poisonous nightshade plant: here's some historical background of how it got its name - Atropine (the poison in the plant) is classified as an anticholinergic drug that affects the nervous system. Drops prepared from the nightshade plant were used to dilate women's pupils, an effect considered attractive. "Bella donna" in Italian means "beautiful woman" - so that's how it got its name.
